From Istanbul Airport to South Africa: How Ana Kurye Recovered a Lost Suit

A forgotten suit on an international flight can become a complicated problem when its owner has already travelled thousands of kilometres away. On 5 September 2026, Chris, a traveler from South Africa, contacted Ana Kurye after accidentally leaving his suit bag on a Turkish Airlines flight. The bag contained a two-piece suit — a jacket and trousers — and had been located by Turkish Airlines International Lost Property at Istanbul Airport. Chris knew where his belongings were. The difficult part was getting them back.

A Short Airport Connection and a Lost Suit

Chris explained that he had a short connection through Istanbul Airport and would not have enough time to complete the lost-property collection process himself. He considered retrieving the suit during another journey through Istanbul in December. However, the Lost Property office could not guarantee that the item would remain available beyond its holding period. Waiting several months could therefore create an additional risk.

Chris decided to investigate whether an independent courier in Istanbul could collect the suit on his behalf and arrange its return to South Africa. That was when he contacted Ana Kurye.

The Complication: A Turkish Consular Power of Attorney

The suit was held by Turkish Airlines International Lost Property. Collecting it through a representative involved more than presenting a tracking or reference number. Chris needed to arrange appropriate authorization documentation. Because he was living in South Africa, he contacted the Turkish consular authorities in Pretoria to prepare a Turkish-language power of attorney. This became the most time-consuming part of the experience.

There were delays in communication, additional emails and an appointment to arrange. Throughout the process, Ana Kurye helped Chris understand the collection requirements and the information needed for the authorization. The lost-property reference and the authorized representative's details were important parts of the documentation.

Weeks of Communication Across Two Countries

Between September and October, Chris and Ana Kurye continued communicating through WhatsApp. His questions covered the power of attorney, consular documents, collection timing, courier arrangements, shipping charges and the process after the suit was recovered. At one point, he considered meeting Ana Kurye during his next transit through Istanbul. But collecting the suit sooner and arranging onward shipment was more practical.

On October 7, Chris confirmed that he had received the power of attorney and began forwarding the required documentation. This was a significant step after weeks of waiting.

Recovering the Suit and Preparing Its Journey

With the documentation arranged, Ana Kurye coordinated the recovery process for the suit held at Istanbul Airport. The service involved local handling and preparation for international transportation. Chris originally estimated that the folded suit bag would measure approximately 50 × 60 × 8 cm and weigh around 1.8 kg. Those estimates helped with early courier enquiries, although final shipping arrangements depend on the prepared package.

By October 12, Ana Kurye had informed Chris that the item had reached the warehouse and that packaging was complete, with the next shipping stage being arranged. Ana Kurye describes this as a milestone: its first international shipment arrangement involving Africa. This describes the company’s account of the arrangement, not confirmation of final delivery.

Why Personal Communication Matters

Chris's experience was not just about transporting a piece of clothing. It was about solving a problem that crossed airline procedures, different countries, consular administration and international logistics. There were documents to organize, deadlines to consider and questions that needed clear answers. Throughout the process, WhatsApp provided a direct communication channel between Chris in South Africa and Ana Kurye in Istanbul.

In his Google review, Chris described the assistance he received from Özlem Boz as exceptional and praised the regular communication. He also acknowledged that dealing with Turkish-language power of attorney requirements had been challenging, but that the support made the process manageable.

Ana Kurye's First Shipping Case to Africa

Every international lost-property case has different requirements. For this case, recovering a suit involved coordinating with Turkish Airlines Lost Property, understanding the consular authorization process and arranging the next steps for sending the item toward South Africa. It was an important new destination for Ana Kurye's international courier operations. More importantly, it demonstrated how a traveler can receive practical assistance even after leaving Türkiye.
